Shazam (2019)

Review of Shazam! (2019):

Shazam! (2019), directed by David F. Sandberg, is a refreshing and light-hearted entry in the DC Extended Universe. The film tells the story of Billy Batson, a 14-year-old foster kid who is chosen by an ancient wizard to become an adult superhero by simply shouting the word “Shazam!”

What sets Shazam! apart from other superhero films is its playful tone and strong focus on heart and humor. Asher Angel does a solid job as young Billy, while Zachary Levi shines in his role as the adult superhero version—bringing childlike wonder, comedic timing, and charm to the screen.

The movie cleverly explores themes of family, identity, and responsibility without ever getting too heavy. The dynamic between Billy and his foster brother Freddy adds emotional depth, while Mark Strong plays the villainous Dr. Sivana with enough menace to balance out the laughs.

Visually, the film delivers satisfying action scenes and fun effects, but it’s the character-driven storytelling and comedic energy that truly make Shazam! stand out.

In short, Shazam! is a feel-good, family-friendly superhero film that proves you don’t need to be dark and gritty to be super.
